Before the invention of the car, whiplash injuries were called “railroad spine” as they were noted mostly in connection with train collisions. The first case of severe neck pain arising from a train collision was documented around 1919. The number of whiplash injuries has since risen sharply due to rear-end motor vehicle collisions. Given the wide variety of symptoms are associated with whiplash injuries, the Quebec Task Force on Whiplash-Associated Disorders coined the phrase ‘Whiplash-Associated Disorders’

What is Whiplash?

Whiplash injuries are caused when the head is thrown violently back then forward again in a whipping motion, causing damage to the ligaments and tendons found in the neck.  This can result in soreness and stiffness around the effected area and in the most extreme cases fractures and dislocations of the neck.

Depending on the seriousness of the injury, symptoms can last from a few hours to months and even years, whiplash can cause permanent damage.

The symptoms of whiplash injury in some people will not appear until a day or two after the accident.

  • Pain or stiffness of the neck
  • Reduced neck movement
  • Dizziness and headaches
